Gurez is an ancient valley that was part of the famous silk route. The Gurez road connects to Gilgit (Pakistan) leading up to Kashgar (China). Wedged between Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, this valley inhabits ethnic Dards/Shins who speak Shina language.
It’s a picturesque valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains, and the Kishanganga River cuts through it. The valley has been the main focus of the archaeological survey, having the remains of ancient culture and civilization. The last council of Buddhism is believed to have been held here in this valley, and there are remains of Sharda university too, an ancient university that drew students from across the world.
The main attractions of Gurez are its historical status, archaeological sites, and the local population that still live by their ancient traditions and culture. The houses are built with mud-bricks and wood and the main occupation of the people is still farming.
