Betaab Valley
Betaab valley is a region of Pahalgam and one of its most mesmerising valleys. One interesting fact about it is that it can’t be visited by any taxi or private vehicle. One of the most surreal offbeat locations of Kashmir, Gurez Valley is found in northern Kashmir. When you are on a voyage to explore the remote regions, do add this place as it takes you a hundred years back. It is divided into two regions. The first part is the Dawar which is the main city of the valley while the more pristine region is the Tulail province. It is a military sensitive area, located in close proximity to the Line of Actual Control(LOC), and you can see the border separating India and Pakistan. You even see the houses, roads, vehicles on the other part of the border. Wave and people actually wave back here. People often wonder if it is safe to come here. It is completely safe. If you have the required permit then with the help of soldiers posted at different military checkpoints, you can explore the region.
There are many activities to do here such as trekking, river rafting, village walks and culture tours etc.
Some must visit places here include Kishanganga Dam, Khandyal Top, Habba Khatoon Peak. Tulail and more.
In winters, heavy snowfall is experienced here and the entire valley is covered in snow and becomes inaccessible. Hence, the appropriate time to make a visit would be from May to September. Acclimatise first.
Daksum Valley
Another remotely located valley of Kashmir, Daksum Valley is present in the Anantnag District. If you are a genuine nature enthusiast and looking for a serene place to be, then Daksum is the answer. Due to its offbeat location, not many people come here and it is often less crowded. However, that does not mean it is not worth visiting. Containing some of the most lush meadows of Kashmir and highly dense forests, the place is a magical one. On one side, it is connected to the Sinthan Top and Margan Top, while on the other, Kishtwar is there. It is often connected to many other places as well like Achabal which is famous as a home of different varieties of trout fishes. You can go fishing and angling here or maybe buy them. There are other things as well that you can do here like trekking. There are many trekking trails here but the most stunning one is the Warwan Valley trek as Daksum Valley is one of its base camps.
Lastly, due to not much development in the infrastructural aspect, the place is not much of a treat in winters when it snows heavily here. Summer is the suitable season to be here.

Activities in Kashmir Tour Packages
Along with various city tours to different towns and tourist attractions like lakes, monumts, gardens and parks, there are a bunch of activities that you can do on this Kashmir trip. From some relaxing ones to adventures that get the adrenaline running through your entire veins, you are here for a treat. Below, we have put up some of the activities included in Kashmir tour packages that you must do.
Gulmarg Gondola
Gulmarg Gondola is the most memorable activity you can do here. Inspired by the French cable car ride, it is one the largest cable car rides situated in the town of Gulmarg. The ride takes you to some unparalleled sights of the Himalayas and when in Kashmir, you must add it to your plans.
There are basically two phases that it takes in place. Operating throughout the year, it is often limited to only phase one due to extreme snowfall in the higher regions.
The first phase starts from the base and goes all the way up to Kongdoori which is located at an altitude of 10,000ft. Here, different activities and trekking begins and is an intermediate spot in the ride. Many people still do it till here.
The Gulmarg Gondola Second phase starts from Kongdori to Apharwat Peak, which is at 13,780 ft above the sea level. From here, you get a stunning view of Alpather Lake. You can engage in different activities here like skiing, snowboarding and sledging. Make the most of it.
Skiing in Gulmarg
With world-class slopes found in the gorgeous town of Gulmarg, skiing is one of the most adventurous things to do here. Ideally done in the cold months of winters, specifically from January till Mid february. As earlier mentioned, heavy snowfall is experienced in the Kashmir valley, where the snow really sticks to the ground. It makes uninterrupted slopes up to 5 kilometres. With grades available for a beginner as well as experienced skier, there are many skilled and professional instructors here for your very first lesson of skiing. Other than skiing, you can enjoy many more winter sports like ice skating, snowmobile rides.
Sonmarg is one more place that is coming forward in offering activities like skiing with Thajiwas Glacier in the background but it is still far behind as compared to the slopes of Gulmarg.
It should be cleared by now that activities like skiing are done only in winters. It is not available in summer. So for this, make your plans in the cold weather of December to January.
Shikara Ride
When we talk about Kashmir, there is always one thing that comes to the mind instantly. It is obviously the iconic Dal Lake and when at this stunning lake, how can one miss the thrilling Shikara ride. This must be the first thing you should do on reaching the city from the airport.
Located in the heart of the capital city, Dal Lake has highlights like the Shikara ride and houseboats. Talking first about the ride, these are wooden boats that are beautifully adorned with flowers and much more and take you on an uninterrupted ferry for kilometres. You get a sneak peek into the Mughal gardens on this ride and visit the floating Fruits and vegetable market.
Now the houseboats that are found on the waters of the lake offer a unique option for accommodation. It is another memorable experience as you wake up to surreal views of the lake in the morning. These houseboats have full-furnished rooms and balconies.
Apart from Dal Lake, another spot for Shikara ride and Houseboats is the very serene Nigeen Lake, located in Srinagar too.
Visit Tulip Garden
If you are an avid lover of natural beauty then you are in treat of something very vibrant. That vibrancy comes from the different varieties of Tulip flowers found in Kashmir valley. One of the largest Tulip gardens of Asia, Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is situated in the Capital city of Srinagar of Jammu and Kashmir. The place looks like a piece of heaven with gorgeous views all around. There are just so many colours and sizes of Tulip flowers available here that you would be pleasantly amazed to see them. It is one of those unmissable destinations that you should add to your itinerary. One of the favourite picnic spots among travellers, visit here for some much needed tranquillity.
The best time to visit here is in March-April since the garden is open for one month only from Mid March to Mid April. The reason behind this being Spring a short-lived season and so do the Tulips. During this time of the year, the famous Tulip Festival is celebrated as well which you can be a part of. The festival celebrated the richness found in the floras of Tulips.
Houseboat Stay
Houseboat stays are something that represents Kashmir in one way or the other. With this you get the opportunity of one of a kind experience in the middle of a lake or lake. This option of accommodation gives you a chance to explore the local culture and have a peaceful retreat. Here, you will get all the facilities and services that you get at a regular hotel. From cosy and comfortable rooms to overlooking balconies, you also get a kitchen in case you want to cook something.
The best location for a houseboat stay is at Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake in Srinagar. You can spend your first night in Kashmir in a houseboat and the experience would be memorable.
You will feel rejuvenated the next day with a breathtaking view in front of you. Since Dal lake is mostly crowded and congested, you should pick the Nigeen lake for a serene time.
It is best to be done on your summer trip to Kashmir. Living in a houseboat in winters is a bit inconvenient. The water of the lake freezes in extreme cold and it is really not a wise pick. Other than that, it will be a fun yet comfortable stay.
Play Golf
Like everything else, Kashmir has the perfect conditions for playing golf as well. There are many locations in India where you can play the sport but enjoying it in the high-altitude meadows with lushiest grasses on the ground is a whole another experience. Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg have some beautiful golf courses set for golfers whether you are a beginner or an experienced individual. The one in Srinagar is located on the side of Dal Lake. Other than the fun of the activity, the most heart-capturing thing here are the views you get to witness on both sides of the course. On one hand, you have the majestic Dal Lake while on the other, the famous Zabarwan mountain range is found. The golf course of Srinaar is clearly visible from Pari Mahal.
The most famous golf course of not only Kashmir but the entire country is the Gulmarg Golf Course. Situated at a distance of about 4 kilometres from the main town, the 18-hole course is set amidst one of the most stunning Gulmarg meadows. Built in the colonial period, it carries a long time legacy. Here, you can see varieties of flowers enhancing the beauty altogether.
Pony Ride in Kashmir
Pony rides are one unconventional form of transport that you will love to experience. It is also quite popular among tourists as it takes you to wide meadows, valleys and glaciers. Other than activity, it is also necessary sometimes especially to such spots where no private vehicle is accessible or not permitted. Some of those places include Baisaran Valley and more. It is something that you can do no matter the time you are in Kashmir. Whether it is the balmy weather of summer or in the chilly climate of December, there will always be people hopping on the back of a pony and enjoying the ride. For the best experience, choose pony riding in Pahalgam, yusmarg, Doodhpathri, Gulmarg etc.
With pony rides, some words of caution also follow. Although it is very safe, it is not recommended for children or senior citizens or anyone with severe back issues. Secondly, Ponies are very friendly animals but you should not harm them in any way. Lastly, if it is your first time, try it at lower slopes before going for the higher grades.
Taste local Kashmiri Cuisine
A Kashmir trip is incomplete without tasting every local dish available here. It is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity that you get on this trip and you can’t forget a food tour on it. With the proper amount of spices like wild garlic, cardamon, saffron and many more, you will put a piece of heaven every time you taste a dish. There are many options of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes that you can explore. Some of them are Aloo Dum, Hara Saag, Mutton, Rogan Josh and Gushtaba. There is also Kashmiri Pulao which tastes heavenly. Start the morning with a steaming cup of Kashmiri Kahwa and be rejuvenated for the entire day. The best place to do this is in Srinagar itself which is the hub of ancient local cuisines.
The main highlight is the multi-course meal which has different dishes prepared with the Indian style, called Wazwan. The mammoth feast is often cooked at the times of special occasions, festivals, weddings etc. Different kinds of flavours could be relished in that big plate and you would remember the taste your entire life.
Go on Shopping
Explore the local markets of Kashmir and buy souvenirs and architectures made by skilled and experienced artists of nearby villages and towns. You get to purchase high quality woollen clothes, handicrafts, and other local products. Pashmina Shawls, Shahtoosh Shawls, Carpets, Dry fruits, and spices are some of the things to buy and bring back home.
The popular markets of Kashmir are in Srinagar like the Poloview Market and others near the Mughal Gardens. Buy authentic saffron from the Pampore market. For good-quality apples, visit the apple orchards on your way to Pahalgam.
When in those local markets, don’t forget to haggle as those items are always overpriced especially for tourists. Don’t buy from anywhere. Try to visit the ones that are known for their quality and authenticity.
Adventurous Activities to do in Kashmir
Beside the ones mentioned above, there are more options of adventure activities to do on this Kashmir trip. From white water rafting at different locations by river to some thrilling trekkers, there are many things listed below.
Rafting in Kashmir
Rafting in Kashmir is another adventurous activity to boost up the adrenaline in the body. With its high-flowing rivers and clear streams, you can definitely go for some hours of thrills. Some of the popular locations for it would be at Lidder river, Aru River in Pahalgam. Even if it is your first time, there are grades from Grade I to Grade IV, you can choose accordingly. Other than this, go for strolls and picnics near the river.
Summer is the best time for river rafting in the valley as the river freezes in winters and it becomes inaccessible. Wear comfortable clothes and follow the instructions
Camping in Kashmir
When going for trekking, there is one more activity you can do that is fun and relaxing. Camping is one thing you must do in Kashmir. There are so many camping spots in the meadows, grasslands and near shores of lakes and rivers. Being away from the city life and living life in some of the remotest places of the country, you will see how minimalism is actually the ideal way of life.
Bring a sturdy tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag for a comfortable stay. Wear comfortable clothes as it is often cold at high-altitudes especially at nights.
Trekking
The most adventurous activity that you can experience in Kashmir is Trekking. There are an endless number of treks accessible in the valley that lands you to some of the most stunning locations. While some of them take an entire week to complete, others can be done in a day or two. Some of the longest yet most rewarding treks include Tarsar Marsar Trek, Kashmir Great Lakes trek while the short ones are Vishansar Lake trek, Alpather lake trek etc.
The trekking trails are a bit challenging but they are soothing too.
With Cliffhangers India, you can plan these treks in an elaborate manner and have a safe voyage. Carry all the trekking gears and pack all the essential items.
Paragliding
Viewing the Kashmir valley from hundreds of feets up is a surreal feeling. This feeling is achieved by experiencing Paragliding, flying above the grassy meadows, glaciers and lakes. There are so many breathtaking locations in Kashmir that you can visit such as in Sonamarg and Srinagar. The park near Dal Lake has the facility for the activity. It is an unmissable thing that you should do here.
The average cost per person is about INR 2000-3500 depending on the grade and the quality of the parachute. It might seem dangerous but it is very safe as done under the supervision of a professional instructor. Summer is the suitable time to do it.
Snow Mobile
Snowmobile is a winter activity best done in the months of January and February when it snows heavily here and there are only heavy layers of snow seen on the ground. The best place to do it is on the best slopes of Gulmarg where you go for an uninterrupted ride of a few kilometres.
If you are a beginner, you can do it under the supervision of skilled snowmobile operators, present there to guide you with important instructions. For a single ride, it can cost you around INR 5000-7000. Wear all the necessary safety gears and comfortable clothes like thermals and windproof jackets.
Hot Air Ballooning
Hot air ballooning is an adventurous activity that you can do in Kashmir to get an aerial view of the entire valley. The panoramic sights from the above are just magical to the eyes. You can see the Tulip garden, Dal Lake and Mughal Gardens. It is available in Srinagar itself in the Zabarwan Park near the Dal lake. In towns in Pahalgam and Yusmarg, there are facilities too where you can experience it.
It will take almost 15-20 minutes to complete it and those minutes are memorable for a lifetime. It will cost you around INR 1000-1500 for a single person. Sunset and sunrise are the best time to do it.
Mountain Biking
Last but not the least, Mountain biking is another thing to do here for a fun trip. This is something that you can do all alone and still have all the fun. If you are on a solo trip to Kashmir, this activity is ideal for you. In this ride, you get to trail through the valleys with rivers gushing on the sides and serene lake at intervals.
There are many routes like Srinagar to Pahalgam, Srinagar to Gulmarg and many more that you can pick. The best time to do it is in summers when the routes are clear and do not have snow as that makes them slippery and wet. Wear a protective helmet and choose a sturdy and newly serviced bike for the adventure.
Gurez Valley Tours
Gurez Valley is the most astonishing and greatest of offbeat destinations in Kashmir for a reason. The high-spedding city life comes to a halt here and you will be in the laps of nature where everything stands still but you will see that there is beauty under apparent stillness too. The people of the Shina tribe are the inhabitants of this region who are very welcoming. Their houses are of primitive nature, made of mud and logs. Here, you will see how people can be happy with the bare minimums that nature provided us. The serenity that this place offers is unparalleled. The approximate duration of the tour is 5 Days and this 1 week time will be imprinted in your memories forever. We skip Srinagar but the compensation is done with the trip to two ethereal off-beat places- Wular and Athwatoo. The tourists spend a night by Wular Lake, at the same time, experiencing the grandness and tranquillity of the largest freshwater lake of India. In Athwatoo, you relax for the night by the shores of a stream with a glorious setting of mountain forest in front of you. Hiking to the twin waterfalls here is another thing to do on the trip. The next two days gives us the opportunity to explore the Gurez Valley, which also contains Tulail Valley. We get a peek into the culture and traditions of Gurez and sightseeing in the daytime is the main part of the tour.
