More popular tourist spots here are Shankaracharya Temple, Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Pari Mahal etc.

Undertake the soothing journey of Srinagar Heritage Walk where you explore the entire city and its lively markets.

Gulmarg

Arguably the most stunning towns of Jammu and Kashmir, Gulmarg is a place where adventure meets serenity. The place that is best visited in the winters when you can immerse in some thrilling sports like skiing, sledging, snowboarding etc. During this time of the year, it snows heavily in the valley and the entire region is as white as salt. January and February are suitable months to visit Gulmarg in winters as the snow really sticks to the ground. The slopes found here are comparatively better than those of Switzerland. The main highlight of Gulmarg city is the Gondola Ride, the highest cable car of the world. The ride takes approximately half an hour and takes you to beautiful places like Koongdori to Apharwat Peak. You also get a glimpse of Alpather Lake on this ride.  These places are too famous for offering the winter sports mentioned above.

You can also come here during the summer season when the gorgeous meadows are just ready to steal your heart. During this time, enjoy golf at the Gulmarg Golf course, trekking, sightseeing etc. One very popular trek of Gulmarg is Alpather Lake trek.

Pahalgam

The place that is a favourite one among the true nature-lovers is Pahalgam. With so many valleys here to explore, you will be in a piece of heaven. Popularly known as the Valley of Shepherd, you have the once-in-a lifetime opportunity to explore some alpine lakes here such as Sheshnag Lake. It is considered sacred in Hinduism and believed that Sheshnag still resides here. People often cover this lake in the holy Amarnath Yatra as it acts as its starting point too. Pilgrims surely include this place in this voyage. Some of the best places that you can put on your itinerary when in Pahalgam are Aru Valley, Baisaran Valley, Chandanwari and Betaab Valley. Here at Betaab, you can also relive your childhood Bollywood dreams as the superhit movie Betaab was shot here. Since then, it has risen to fame.

Apart from sightseeing, there are many recreational activities to do here such as pony rides, ATV rides, trekking and White water rafting. Pony rides is a Kashmir specific adventure and Pahalgam is one of those few places where you can experience it. The ABC of Pahalgam – Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari are visited on the back of the ponies or horses.

Sonamarg

Sonamarg which means Meadow of Gold has everything golden here. Located in the Ganderbal district of kashmir, it has so many things to offer for everyone. Be it an adventure buff or a peace tracker. Not only the region is filled with beauty, the route from Srinagar to Sonamarg has so many scenic spots that you will love all of it. They are instagram worthy and keep a camera to click each and every moment.

The main highlight of Sonamarg are its trekking trails. You must have heard of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. Well, Sonmarg is its starting point, particularly the Shitkadi village.

The trek is completed in 7-9 days and covers almost 75 kilometres. The long journey is worthwhile as it takes you to some of the most tranquil Lakes of Kashmir such as Gadsar lake, Vishansar lake, Satsar lake, Gangabal Lake and many more. You have to cross three passes such as Thajiwas Glacier, which can be spotted from every corner of Sonmarg.

The best activities to do here are Pony riding, ATV rides, trekking, mountaineering, fishing and angling.

Yusmarg

Yusmarg is believed to have been visited by Jesus once as he was mesmerised by its beauty and hence the name, Yusmarg, “ Meadow of Jesus”.  The place is less popular than Sonmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg due to its remote location. However, the greenery found here along with thick forests are the true testament to its beauty. Also called “ Yusuf Sarai”, it is a beautiful region of Jammu and Kashmir. It is nestled by the Pir Panjal Ranges from all around and forms a serene environment altogether.

Only the true nature lovers add it to their itinerary and if you want some tranquillity in the lap of nature, this is the correct choice. There are many trekking trails here that you should undertake to end up in stunning locations like NilNag Lake. Sunset Peak trek is the most popular trek of Yusmarg. Another highlight of Yusmarg is the Dudhganga River where you can picnic, fish and much more. Some other activities to do here are off road biking, ATV rides etc.

Visit here in summers from may to September as the climatic conditions are favourable here and routes are clear as well. It snows here in winter.

Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri, as the name suggests is also called “ The Valley of Milk”. It is one of the stunning meadows, located in the Kashmir Valley. It is specifically situated in the Budgam District with its vast-spradd valleys, dense forests of pine and fir trees etc. The prime highlight of Doodhpathri is the Shaliganga River. Holding religious significance in the region, the river gushes melodies as it meanders in the valley. The name of Doodhpathri is due to this ever calming river. Since every day, it passes through so many rocks and pebbles, that its colour turns milky and hence the name. It is an excellent place for arranging a picnic or a stroll in the morning or evening. Other than this, there are other activities too such as ATV rides, pony riding, paragliding, trekking etc. With the soothing trekking trails, Bodpathri Lakes trek is the most popular trek of Doodhpathri.

Since it is located in the remote regions of Jammu and Kashmir, only a handful of travellers come here. For some true natural beauty, it is a must visit place. Come here in Summer lasting from May to September as the temperature is mild with clear skies.

Betaab Valley

Betaab valley is a region of Pahalgam and one of its most mesmerising valleys. One interesting fact about it is that it can’t be visited by any taxi or private vehicle. You have to hire a pony for the transportation or you can simply trek here. So, trekking is one thing to do here. It was earlier named as Hagan Valley and only after the superhit movie Betaab was shot here, it got renamed to Betaab Valley. It is a must-visit place to reminisce about your Bollywood fantasies. If you are on your Honeymoon trip, it is a quintessential place to add on your itinerary as you can click pictures with your better half in those romantic poses.

Located in the Northern Part of Kashmir, the valley has served as one of the popular picnic spots as well where the banks of Lidder river are the favourites among nature-lovers. Other than a joyful picnic, you can also have the fun of white water rafting at the river. There are many grades here to cater the needs of even a beginner as well. The flow of water is gentle and hence quite safe.

The best time to visit the valley is in summer when the weather is pleasant and all you can see here are numerous varieties of wildflowers enhancing its overall beauty.

Gurez Valley

One of the most surreal offbeat locations of Kashmir, Gurez Valley is found in northern Kashmir. When you are on a voyage to explore the remote regions, do add this place as it takes you a hundred years back. It is divided into two regions. The first part is the Dawar which is the main city of the valley while the more pristine region is the Tulail province. It is a military sensitive area, located in close proximity to the Line of Actual Control(LOC), and you can see the border separating India and Pakistan. You even see the houses, roads, vehicles on the other part of the border. Wave and people actually wave back here.  People often wonder if it is safe to come here. It is completely safe. If you have the required permit then with the help of soldiers posted at different military checkpoints, you can explore the region.

There are many activities to do here such as trekking, river rafting, village walks and culture tours etc.

Some must visit places here include Kishanganga Dam, Khandyal Top, Habba Khatoon Peak. Tulail and more.

In winters, heavy snowfall is experienced here and the entire valley is covered in snow and becomes inaccessible. Hence, the appropriate time to make a visit would be from May to September. Acclimatise first.

Daksum Valley

Another remotely located valley of Kashmir, Daksum Valley is present in the Anantnag District. If you are a genuine nature enthusiast and looking for a serene place to be, then Daksum is the answer. Due to its offbeat location, not many people come here and it is often less crowded. However, that does not mean it is not worth visiting. Containing some of the most lush meadows of Kashmir and highly dense forests, the place is a magical one. On one side, it is connected to the Sinthan Top and Margan Top, while on the other, Kishtwar is there. It is often connected to many other places as well like Achabal which is famous as a home of different varieties of trout fishes. You can go fishing and angling here or maybe buy them. There are other things as well that you can do here like trekking. There are many trekking trails here but the most stunning one is the Warwan Valley trek as Daksum Valley is one of its base camps.

Lastly, due to not much development in the infrastructural aspect, the place is not much of a treat in winters when it snows heavily here. Summer is the suitable season to be here.

Best Time To Plan Kashmir Tour

Kashmir is a year-round destination. You will always see crowds here at different scenic spots or locations to do outdoor activities. Figuring the best time to plan a Kashmir trip really depends on you. It is based on the type of activity you want to do or city tours you want to add in your itinerary. Here, we have listed different seasons of the year and the things you can do during that particular time.

Kashmir In Spring (March To April)

Spring is the very first season of the year when sightseeing and other activities resume in the Kashmir valley. The weather soothes a bit after the chilly days and nights of winter. The skies start to clear out with temperature starting to rise and be between 15-20 degree celsius during daytime. Spring is the time when flowers dot the entire region and the best place to visit is the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar. Routes also start to be declared open and become accessible.

Kashmir In September (May To September)

Summer is the peak season of tourism in Kashmir. With weather becoming pleasant and balmy, there is literally everything available you wish to do. From sightseeing to outdoor activities like trekking, white water rafting, paragliding etc, you can experience a fun trip in months like June, July and August. It does rain in late July and August so packing a raincoat is suggested. Every highway leading to the valley and internal roads are clear and it is an excellent time for a road trip.

Kashmir In Autumn (October And  November)

Not the peak season but that’s what makes it more particular. With less crowd, you can have a peaceful time in the valley for picnics, strolls etc. You even get better deals on hotels and transport. Sightseeing and activities are available as they are in summer. You will see brown and golden leaves lying around, making it instagrammable. It is an amazing time for some photography with different shades of hues casting over the entire valley. Days are clear but nights start to get colder as winter approaches.

Kashmir In Winter ( December To  February)

It might seem untrue but lots of people visit kashmir in the shivering months of winter. Instead of being a high-altitude region, there are plenty of crowds during this time of the year. It snows heavily and the valley turns into a winter snowland. The temperature drops subzero and goes in minus with fog all around. The reason behind the tourists coming here is the availability of winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, sledding and much more. The best places for such recreational and fun activities are Gulmarg, Apharwat lake etc. There are high chances you might catch a live snowfall.

Kashmir Offbeat Tours

Most of the tourists that come to Kashmir visit the traditional attractions like Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Srinagar

Activities in Kashmir Tour Packages

Along with various city tours to different towns and tourist attractions like lakes, monumts, gardens and parks, there are a bunch of activities that you can do on this Kashmir trip. From some relaxing ones to adventures that get the adrenaline running through your entire veins, you are here for a treat. Below, we have put up some of the activities included in Kashmir tour packages that you must do.

Gulmarg Gondola

Gulmarg Gondola is the most memorable activity you can do here. Inspired by the French cable car ride, it is one the largest cable car rides situated in the town of Gulmarg. The ride takes you to some unparalleled sights of the Himalayas and when in Kashmir, you must add it to your plans.

There are basically two phases that it takes in place. Operating throughout the year, it is often limited to only phase one due to extreme snowfall in the higher regions.

The first phase starts from the base and goes all the way up to Kongdoori which is located at an altitude of 10,000ft. Here, different activities and trekking begins and is an intermediate spot in the ride. Many people still do it till here.

The Gulmarg Gondola Second phase starts from Kongdori to Apharwat Peak, which is at 13,780 ft above the sea level. From here, you get a stunning view of Alpather Lake. You can engage in different activities here like skiing, snowboarding and sledging. Make the most of it.

Skiing in Gulmarg

With world-class slopes found in the gorgeous town of Gulmarg, skiing is one of the most adventurous things to do here. Ideally done in the cold months of winters, specifically from January till Mid february. As earlier mentioned, heavy snowfall is experienced in the Kashmir valley, where the snow really sticks to the ground. It makes uninterrupted slopes up to 5 kilometres. With grades available for a beginner as well as experienced skier, there are many skilled and professional instructors here for your very first lesson of skiing. Other than skiing, you can enjoy many more winter sports like ice skating, snowmobile rides.

Sonmarg is one more place that is coming forward in offering activities like skiing with Thajiwas Glacier in the background but it is still far behind as compared to the slopes of Gulmarg.

It should be cleared by now that activities like skiing are done only in winters. It is not available in summer. So for this, make your plans in the cold weather of December to January.

Shikara Ride

When we talk about Kashmir, there is always one thing that comes to the mind instantly. It is obviously the iconic Dal Lake and when at this stunning lake, how can one miss the thrilling Shikara ride. This must be the first thing you should do on reaching the city from the airport.

Located in the heart of the capital city, Dal Lake has highlights like the Shikara ride and houseboats. Talking first about the ride, these are wooden boats that are beautifully adorned with flowers and much more and take you on an uninterrupted ferry for kilometres. You get a sneak peek into the Mughal gardens on this ride and visit the floating Fruits and vegetable market.

Now the houseboats that are found on the waters of the lake offer a unique option for accommodation. It is another memorable experience as you wake up to surreal views of the lake in the morning. These houseboats have full-furnished rooms and balconies.

Apart from Dal Lake, another spot for Shikara ride and Houseboats is the very serene Nigeen Lake, located in Srinagar too.

Visit Tulip Garden

If you are an avid lover of natural beauty then you are in treat of something very vibrant. That vibrancy comes from the different varieties of Tulip flowers found in Kashmir valley. One of the largest Tulip gardens of Asia, Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is situated in the Capital city of Srinagar of Jammu and Kashmir. The place looks like a piece of heaven with gorgeous views all around. There are just so many colours and sizes of Tulip flowers available here that you would be pleasantly amazed to see them. It is one of those unmissable destinations that you should add to your itinerary. One of the favourite picnic spots among travellers, visit here for some much needed tranquillity.

The best time to visit here is in March-April since the garden is open for one month only from Mid March to Mid April. The reason behind this being Spring a short-lived season and so do the Tulips. During this time of the year, the famous Tulip Festival is celebrated as well which you can be a part of. The festival celebrated the richness found in the floras of Tulips.

Houseboat Stay

Houseboat stays are something that represents Kashmir in one way or the other. With this you get the opportunity of one of a kind experience in the middle of a lake or lake. This option of accommodation gives you a chance to explore the local culture and have a peaceful retreat. Here, you will get all the facilities and services that you get at a regular hotel. From cosy and comfortable rooms to overlooking balconies, you also get a kitchen in case you want to cook something.

The best location for a houseboat stay is at Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake in Srinagar. You can spend your first night in Kashmir in a houseboat and the experience would be memorable.

You will feel rejuvenated the next day with a breathtaking view in front of you. Since Dal lake is mostly crowded and congested, you should pick the Nigeen lake for a serene time.

It is best to be done on your summer trip to Kashmir. Living in a houseboat in winters is a bit inconvenient. The water of the lake freezes in extreme cold and it is really not a wise pick. Other than that, it will be a fun yet comfortable stay.

Play Golf

Like everything else, Kashmir has the perfect conditions for playing golf as well. There are many locations in India where you can play the sport but enjoying it in the high-altitude meadows with lushiest grasses on the ground is a whole another experience. Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg have some beautiful golf courses set for golfers whether you are a beginner or an experienced individual. The one in Srinagar is located on the side of Dal Lake. Other than the fun of the activity, the most heart-capturing thing here are the views you get to witness on both sides of the course. On one hand, you have the majestic Dal Lake while on the other, the famous Zabarwan mountain range is found. The golf course of Srinaar is clearly visible from Pari Mahal.

The most famous golf course of not only Kashmir but the entire country is the Gulmarg Golf Course. Situated at a distance of about 4 kilometres from the main town, the 18-hole course is set amidst one of the most stunning Gulmarg meadows. Built in the colonial period, it carries a long time legacy. Here, you can see varieties of flowers enhancing the beauty altogether.

Pony Ride in Kashmir

Pony rides are one unconventional form of transport that you will love to experience. It is also quite popular among tourists as it takes you to wide meadows, valleys and glaciers. Other than activity, it is also necessary sometimes especially to such spots where no private vehicle is accessible or not permitted. Some of those places include Baisaran Valley and more. It is something that you can do no matter the time you are in Kashmir. Whether it is the balmy weather of summer or in the chilly climate of December, there will always be people hopping on the back of a pony and enjoying the ride. For the best experience, choose pony riding in Pahalgam, yusmarg, Doodhpathri, Gulmarg etc.

With pony rides, some words of caution also follow. Although it is very safe, it is not recommended for children or senior citizens or anyone with severe back issues. Secondly, Ponies are very friendly animals but you should not harm them in any way. Lastly, if it is your first time, try it at lower slopes before going for the higher grades.

The popular markets of Kashmir are in Srinagar like the Poloview Market and others near the Mughal Gardens. Buy authentic saffron from the Pampore market. For good-quality apples, visit the apple orchards on your way to Pahalgam.

When in those local markets, don’t forget to haggle as those items are always overpriced especially for tourists. Don’t buy from anywhere. Try to visit the ones that are known for their quality and authenticity.
