It is so because skiing here is available from ₹4,500 for a single day on hire ski equipment to ₹1,20,000 for a luxurious week, which includes a private instructor and heated suite.

Gondola and Lift Pass Prices

The Gulmarg gondola is the heart of each day here, and among the highest functioning cable cars in the world. The price for the first phase (Gulmarg to Kongdori) is ₹740. The 2nd phase from Apharwat Peak till the end of the trek is ₹1,250. The majority of skiers purchase the package for both phases at ₹1,800, as Phase 2 is where the powder and longer runs begin.

Access to the lower slopes through the ski lift is around ₹300 per day, and for chairlift access, nearer to ₹600 per day. Factor in that you may only need phase 2 if you are only skiing the beginner slopes near Kongdori.

Gear Rental Costs

For nearly all the visitors, renting is a better option than buying, and Gulmarg’s rental stores make it easy. Ski hire charges are approximately ₹600 to ₹700 per day for ski equipment, poles, skis and boots. The price range of snowboard equipment is anywhere from ₹700 to ₹1400. Do the math – if you need a jacket to ski in, you’ll spend ₹300 a day and have to rent trousers for about ₹200 a day, plus goggles for about ₹100 a day.

A helpful hint to remember. The rentals in Tangmarg and Srinagar are much less expensive than those in Gulmarg because there are fewer shops in the former. Renting your gear in advance of Gulmarg from Srinagar is definitely a cost saver.

Instructor and Lesson Costs

The less expensive option is the group lessons, which cost ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 per day per person. You’ll be on a slope with a few other novices, so you don’t have to pay as much or, quite frankly, have as steep a learning curve as you would if you were on your own.

Private instructions are costly, and the cost ranges from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 a day depending on the level and experience of the instructor. The upper end of that range is taken up by certified backcountry guides for advanced or off-piste skiing. Group lessons are quite okay if you are a beginner; leave the private lessons for after you have mastered the basics.

Accommodation Costs by Category

The location of where you stay moves your overall costs the most. Budget accommodation in the form of homestays and hostels ranges from ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 per night, and many will offer home-cooked Kashmiri cuisine. The middle-class 2-3 star hotels charge from ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 per night, and have proper heating and dining halls. The hotels with spas and heated pools begin at around ₹20,000 and go over the top of ₹25,000 a night.

Other Winter Activity Costs

Not all members of your group have to ski. The price of a snow bike tour in the meadows is ₹1,000 – ₹1,500. The cost of sledging and pony rides is between ₹500 and ₹1,000, and they are suitable for children and those who do not ski. Camping in the snow is a more memorable alternative to staying in a hotel, and you’ll have to pay ₹5,000 to ₹8,000 per night with the bonfire included.

How to Cut Your Gulmarg Skiing Costs

Book your gondola pass and hotel in advance, as both are on an upward trend as they approach peak season. When traveling in groups, the accommodation cost, gear, and even the instructor cost will be divided among more people. Group lessons can reduce instruction costs by almost half compared to private lessons.

Timing matters too. Try to avoid Christmas and New Year week in particular, as prices spike 30-50 percent during these busy periods. Early December or March (when the crowds are down) can produce the same slopes for much less.
