Chillai Kalan in Kashmir: Dates and Travel Tips

Ask anyone in Srinagar about winter, and one word comes up before “snowfall” or “skiing.” Chillai Kalan. It’s the 40-day stretch that locals brace for every year, and increasingly, the window a specific kind of traveller plans their entire trip around.

What Is Chillai Kalan?

Chillai Kalan is Kashmir’s harshest winter period. It runs for exactly 40 days, from December 21 to January 30 each year. The name comes from Persian, roughly translating to “the major cold.” During this stretch, temperatures drop well below freezing, water bodies ice over, and the valley settles into its deepest winter character.

It doesn’t end abruptly. Chillai Kalan is followed by two shorter, milder cold spells: Chillai Khurd (20 days, “small cold”) and Chillai Bachha (10 days, “baby cold”). Together, this traditional three-part calendar has shaped how Kashmiris plan their winters for generations, long before modern weather forecasting arrived.

What Actually Happens During Chillai Kalan

  • A remarkable drop in temperature occurs: Day temperature in many places is 2-7°C and night temperature is often below freezing in Srinagar and in higher places, such as Gulmarg and Pahalgam, it is frequently well below freezing.
  • Small water bodies can freeze during a cold Chillai Kalan: Parts of Dal Lake ice over in a cold Chillai Kalan; smaller water bodies freeze in various parts of the valley.
  • The locals wear the traditional pheran, a long woolen coat, and also wear a kangri, a small firepot made from wicker wood, with some hot embers, under their pheran, which is a well-established Kashmiri winter tradition.
  • It is most likely to occur, but not necessarily, at Chillai Kalan when it is statistically the heaviest and most frequent snow in Kashmir. However, in recent years, it has rained a little less during the Chillaikalan season, which means snow is not guaranteed on any given day.
  • Roads and mobility may be impacted: Some passes are impacted by snow and ice, and higher passes may be affected; visibility may be reduced on affected days.

Should You Visit Kashmir During Chillaikalan?

Yes, if you are interested in Kashmir in its rawest and most dramatic state, with the fewest people. It’s real winter and not a postcard winter. This is the time of year when photographers, skiers, and others seeking a true snow experience can’t beat. The ski season is on in Gulmarg all throughout Chhaili Kalan, and the Dal Lake houseboat experience is one that is very different in the snow.

If you are susceptible to severe cold or traveling with very young children or senior family members and do not have appropriate winter clothing, you should think twice. Allow flexibility instead of a packed schedule.

Packing for Chillai Kalan

  • Heavy thermal base layers, not just a warm jacket on top
  • Waterproof, insulated snow boots; regular winter shoes aren’t enough
  • Gloves, a wool cap, and a scarf that covers the lower face on the coldest days
  • Consider a kangri or hot water bottle for your stay; most houseboats and hotels can arrange one
  • A flexible itinerary with buffer days built in, in case weather affects a specific day’s plans
