Overview

The Gulmarg Golf course in Kashmir is located in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas valley in the Baramulla District of Jammu and Kashmir, India which defines the tradition and beauty of this area.

It was founded during the British colonial authority in the early 1900s and this 18-hole green golf course is said to be the highest in the world and one of the oldest in India.

This was used by the British Indian elite as a retreat to avoid the summer in the plains and this was first used as a resort. This valley has natural beauty to offer with a pleasant climate that makes it ideal for playing.

It is said to be the tallest as it is situated at a height of 2,650 meters above sea level. It was designed by the renowned golf architect Ranjit Nanda which is now currently run by Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation. 

In 1911, the British established the renowned Gulmarg Golf Club, using the area as a vacation destination.

Colonel Neville Chamberlain constructed a 6-hole course in 1890–1891 that gave rise to Gulmarg’s reputation as India’s golfing mecca; at the time, the greens were referred to as browns. In 1922, Gulmarg hosted the first golf championship.

In 1929, the Nedou’s Cup was first presented. Scotland lost to “The World” in 1930. From December to April the snow continues to cover the course.

Professionals who are registered with the Tourism Department can rent golf sets and balls.

  • By Air: To reach Gulmarg, you must take your flight to Srinagar. This is the nearest airport to Gulmarg that is Srinagar International Airport (SXR), also known as Sheik Ul Alam International Airport which is approximately 57 km from Gulmarg.

     

  • By Rail: The Jammu Tawi Railway Station is the closest train station to Gulmarg that is situated 300 kilometers apart in Jammu. The most well-liked trains that travel to Jammu from major Indian cities are the Jammu Mail, Jammu Tawi Express, and New Delhi-Jammu Tawi Rajdhani Express.
     
  • By Road: The Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC) operates regular bus services between Srinagar and Gulmarg that takes around 2 hours to reach. Taxis are most convenient and comfortable mode of transportation. It takes 2 hours to cover this 60 kms from the Srinagar city to reach Gulmarg. Either you can book in advance or can also book on spot

Once in Gulmarg, the golf course is easily accessible by local transport or on foot, as it is centrally located.
