The other side of Khardung La in Leh presents completely different scenery. The barren mountains transform into a cold desert valley with dunes near the double-humped camels and settlements that are remnants of the historical Silk Route.

Well aware of the hard and rough road, the villages well worth visiting, and the points that forever disappear when it comes to most itineraries. The purpose of this guide has been to highlight all of the above.

Where Nubra Valley Is and How High It Sits

Nubra Valley can be found north of Leh and at the meeting point of Nubra and Shyok rivers, with an elevation of about 10,000 feet. This height is lower than that of Leh, which works well for travelers coming to Nubra Valley from Leh because it will be easier for them to adapt.

How to Reach Nubra Valley From Leh

Jungla La Pass is the most common way to reach Nubra Valley, as it is regarded as the highest motorable pass in the world. The distance varies between 120 and 150 km depending on the destination within Nubra Valley. The trip to Nubra Valley takes four to five hours.

People can also take a more complicated and longer route through Wari La pass at an elevation of about 17,400 feet, which is more than Khardung La’s elevation. Every year, the road in Nubra Valley is covered by snow until June, and it is not very even ground either.

Permit You Need

Nubra Valley requires an Inner Line Permit, due to its location near border hotspots. We handle the permit hassle for all of our Ladakh trips, so after you reach Leh, you won’t have to bother with this anymore.

Best Time to Visit Nubra Valley

The season from mid-May to September is ideal, with pleasant temperatures and good access. The winter months are different, with the temperature going down to -25°C during the hardest winter months of December through March, making traveling really difficult in all regards. For these reasons, we do not suggest travelers take their first trip during that time, even if there are some adventurers who travel to this area every year regardless of conditions.

Top Places to See in Nubra Valley

Diskit: is the valley’s main town and home to Nubra’s oldest and largest monastery, worth visiting for its striking murals and the giant Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the valley below.

Hunder: just past Diskit, is where most travelers head for the dunes and the double-humped Bactrian camel rides that make Nubra genuinely unlike anywhere else in Ladakh. If your schedule allows it, time your visit for sunset. The light on the dunes at that hour is the kind of thing photographs never quite capture.

Panamik: sits further north, close to the Siachen Glacier, and is known for natural hot springs believed to have healing properties for arthritis and skin conditions. It stays far less visited than Diskit or Hunder, and honestly, we think that is exactly why it is worth the extra drive.

Turtuk: a Balti village near the Pakistan border, blends Indo-Tibetan and Central Asian influences in a way no other Nubra village does. Stone houses, apricot orchards, and a genuinely different cultural feel make it worth the distance, and it already features in several of our Leh Ladakh packages for exactly that reason.

Things to Do in Nubra Valley

Nubra Valley offers visitors more than just the classic must-see spots. For instance, while camel rides around the Hunder sand dunes are the most prevalent activity, white-water rafting at the Shyok River is enough to spike the adrenaline and make the visit an even more memorable experience. For travelers looking for more secluded paddling trips, quad biking around the dunes is another great option.

Visiting Diskit monastery is not about snapping photos alone; guided tours of it reveal amazing stories about Nubra Valley and its Silk Route glory.

Where to Stay in Nubra Valley

The choice of accommodation varies from hotels to guest houses and homestays, mainly located in the Diskit and Hunder region. We strongly recommend considering homestays not just as budget-friendly options but as part of the whole travel experience. The fact that it allows guests to stay overnight with a local family and share their traditional meal with them while getting to know about their life along the old trade routes is part of what makes it such an exciting experience.

Combining Nubra With Pangong Lake

Many travelers do not backtrack to Leh after Nubra, choosing instead to continue directly to Pangong Lake via the Shyok Village route. It saves a full day compared to returning through Leh first, though the road surface runs rougher in places than the main highway.
