Places to Visit Near Srinagar (Best Day Trips)

Not every corner of Kashmir needs an overnight stay. Within a two-and-a-half-hour drive of Srinagar sit waterfalls, meadows, wildlife parks, and saffron fields that most itineraries skip simply because travellers don’t know they can be done in a single day. If you’re based in Srinagar for a few nights or just have one free day between longer legs of your trip, this is the list to work from.

1. Pampore Saffron Fields

Just 15 km from Srinagar on the Pahalgam highway, Pampore is India’s saffron capital. Outside the short late-October to mid-November bloom window, there isn’t much to see, but during it, this is one of the most photographed sights in Kashmir.

2. Manasbal Lake

Often skipped in favour of Dal Lake, Manasbal is quieter, ringed by lotus flowers in season, and a genuinely good spot for birdwatching — migratory birds arrive here through autumn and winter. It sits en route to Pahalgam and Sonamarg, so it works well as a short stop rather than a dedicated trip on its own.

3. Doodhpathri

Meaning “Valley of Milk,” Doodhpathri is a green meadow threaded by the Shaliganga River, about 45 km and under two hours from Srinagar. It’s one of the easiest offbeat day trips — good roads, gentle walking, and riverside picnic spots that make it especially popular with families.

4. Yusmarg

A less-visited alternative to Gulmarg, Yusmarg sits in the Budgam district and is known for open meadows, pony rides, and the short trek down to Nilnag Lake. It’s roughly 50 km and about two hours from Srinagar.

5. Gulmarg

Kashmir’s best-known hill station is close enough for a genuine day trip — 50 to 60 km, about 1.5 to 2 hours each way. The Gulmarg Gondola (Asia’s highest cable car) is the main draw, along with golf in summer and skiing from December onward.

6. Aharbal Waterfall

Known as the “Niagara Falls of Kashmir,” Aharbal is about 65 km and 2 to 2.5 hours from Srinagar in Kulgam district. It’s less crowded than the closer-in destinations, making it a good pick if your priority is a quieter day out with real hiking and photography.

7. Dachigam National Park

At just 22 km and under 45 minutes from Srinagar, Dachigam is the easiest wildlife day trip in Kashmir — and the only place you’re likely to spot the endangered Kashmiri Hangul (stag) in the wild. Best visited early morning.

8. Pahalgam & Sonamarg (Long Day Trips)

At 90+ km and roughly 3 hours each way, Pahalgam and Sonamarg push the definition of a “day trip,” but both are doable if you leave by 6:30–7 AM and are comfortable with a long day on the road. Most travellers with more than one day in Kashmir choose to stay overnight instead —

Meadows & Waterfall Day: Srinagar → Aharbal Waterfall → Yusmarg (combine only if starting very early, as both are 2 hrs apart from each other)

Easy Family Day: Srinagar → Doodhpathri → back by evening (most relaxed option, minimal driving)

Wildlife + Culture Day: Srinagar → Dachigam National Park (morning safari) → Mughal Gardens & Old Srinagar (afternoon)

Autumn Special (Late Oct–Nov only): Srinagar → Pampore Saffron Fields → Awantipora Ruins → back to Srinagar by noon

Tips for Day Trips from Srinagar

• Start early: most of these routes are best experienced in soft morning light and before other tourist traffic builds up

• Check road conditions before heading to Aharbal or Yusmarg in late autumn, as light snowfall can begin at higher points from late October
