Rafting

Due to both Zanskar and Indus rivers flowing in proximity, there are abundant river rafting routes in Sham Valley. 

A popular one is from Phey to Nimoo, covering around 22 kilometres. The gradient is easy to moderate. Beginners can try their hand at rafting here. 

For a more adventurous time, there are other routes in and around the valley. Those include Phey to Saspol (30 kilometres, moderate), Nimo to Alchi(25 kilometres, moderate), Chilling to Nimoo (28 kilometres, difficult) etc. 

These routes provide excellent views of the entire Sham Valley and Sangam point. 

Summer, from June to September, is the best time for river rafting in the valley. 

Explore Likir Monastery

As you visit Sham Valley, do explore the Likir Monastery. It is one of the most popular monasteries in Ladakh. 

The Gompa is located in the Likir Village of the valley, about 9 kilometers from the Srinagar-Leh Highway. 

From Leh city, it is about 52 kilometers away. 

Likir Monastery saw renovation in the 18th century after being built back in the 11th century. 

As you arrive at the Gompa, there’s a 25 feet gold plated statue of Buddha in the centre of the entire complex. 

The Monastery offers a scenic view of the village and valley.

Sham valley trek

The trek is also known as the “baby trek” due to being easier than most of the treks in Ladakh. It is the ideal option for a beginner. 

Lasting for about 4 days, trekkers cover a total distance of about 32 kilometres. 

The trek goes through meadows, forests, local villages, monasteries, etc. Hence, with Sham Valley trek, trekkers get the perfect opportunity to experience the raw beauty as well as culture and tradition of Ladakh. 

The prime attraction of the trek would be the Alchi Monastery. It is one of the largest as well as oldest Gompas in Ladakh, built in the 11th century. 

The trekking trails remain accessible throughout the year. 

Camping

Camping is one of the best things to do in Sham Valley. 

The flat meadows, villages, streams provide some ideal camping spots here.

Taking an example of the Sham Valley, you pitch your tents at Yangthang, which is a gorgeous water stream. 

Avoiding the monotony, camping on the third day is at Ang village. The village is filled with apricot orchards. In the evening, you should explore the blooming orchards. 

Suru river provides some breathtaking campsites, with a beautiful view of the clear water. 

Bring a sturdy tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag for a comfortable stay. 

Bike riding

Bike riding is one of the most exciting things to do in Sham Valley.

A one day trip from Leh to Sham Valley is often part of every Ladakh itinerary. Covering around 180-200 kilometres in the round trip, the bike journey is as fun as it gets. 

In a single day, places like Magnetic Hill, Sangam Point, Likir Monastery, Alchi Monastery, Basgo Palace, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and Chilling village are covered. 

The scenic sights on the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH1) are the highlight of the bike riding adventure. 

The idea of exploring Sham Valley via a bike gives you the liberty to follow the itinerary at your own pace. 

Summer is a convenient time for bike riding in the valley.

Stargazing

Another addition to the popular things to do in Sham Valley is stargazing. 

Since Sham Valley lies in the alpine regions of Ladakh, there’s minimal pollution. The celestial bodies and stars are clearer to the eyes. 

You can even bring a high-resolution telescope for a more closer and stable look. 

Places around monasteries like Alchi and Likir are excellent spots for stargazing. 

Stargazers often set up for the entire night for a look into the infinity. 

Essential things to keep in mind before visiting sham valley

  • The best time to visit Sham Valley for outdoor activities is in summer time. With moderate climate and average temperature ranging between 15°C to 25°C, different sports are available. 
  • As you visit the valley, carry a visual ID proof, passport size photos, etc. You don’t need an Inner Line Permit(ILP) for Sham Valley. 
  • More things to keep in your bag include suitable clothes such as shirts, tshirts, trousers, jeans, slippers, walking shoes, etc. Carry sunscreen, moisturizer, first aid kit, snacks, water bottle, power bank, camera, torch, etc. 
  • Instead of relying completely on online or UPI payments, bring enough cash. Most shops accept cash only. ATMs are sparse here too. 
  • There’s limited to no internet connectivity in the valley. Carry a satellite Mobile or GPS to track routes. 
  • Blend in with the atmosphere in Leh for at least a day or two before visiting the Sham Valley. 
  • The Valley is around 80 kilometres one way. It may vary depending on the route you are taking. It takes longer via Kargil. Hire a cab or taxi in advance for an easy ride.
