A tribute to the brave souls who sacrificed their lives on the altars of patriotism, the Hall of Fame is a museum maintained by the Indian army showcasing the stories and moments of the lives of soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan war. The place is a famous tourist destination showcasing pictures and postcards, uniforms of Indian and Pakistani captured soldiers, a documentary and many other things to let you have a glimpse into the life of a soldier. Hall of Fame Museum

Located at a distance of over 4 km from Leh on the Leh-Kargil highway, the Hall of fame is a two-storied museum. The ground floor features the stills from the Kargil war. The OP Vijay Gallery on this floor features the weapons used in the Kargil war, postcards and letters soldiers wrote to their families and pictures of the soldiers who laid down their lives under the headline ‘Lest We Forget’.

The 30-minute documentary of the Kargil War is bound to fill you with emotions and pride.

The first floor features the ammunition and uniforms of the captured soldiers of the Pakistan army. The museum showcases army posts in the critical Siachen Glacier area. It also has pictures of soldiers training in the bizarre atmosphere of Siachen.

The framed letter of Captain Vijayant Thapar to his parents before he attained martyrdom will fill your eyes with gushing tears and grief over the sacrifices made by the soldiers.

The museum also contains a souvenir shop and a photo studio where you can dress up in Ladakhi attire and get your pictures clicked.


Best Time to Visit

The museum is open for tourist visits throughout the year. However, in the winter months of November to March, roads are blocked due to heavy snowfall. The best time to visit the museum is the same as the best time to visit Leh Ladakh which is from April to June.

Even though July, August and September are rainy months in the area, Leh Ladakh receives little to no rainfall. Though, 2-3 days in the month might be days of heavy downpours. You can also choose July to September as your months of travel. The best time to visit Hall of fame is from April to September.


How to Reach

At a distance of 4 km from Leh Ladakh, how to reach this museum is not a problematic issue. There are three ways to reach the hall of fame.

  • By air

The nearest airport to the area is the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport at a distance of 2 km from the area. You can either take a cab from the airport or walk to the museum.

  • By train

The nearest railway station to the Leh area is the Jammu Tawi railway station. It is at a distance of over 700 km from this museum. You would either have to take a cab from the station or hire a bike for a bike ride in the area.

  • By road

The state and central government buses traverse the area frequently. You can also travel by your own vehicle to either the Leh-Kargil road or Manali-Leh road. You can also take a cab from the main Leh area. Also, you can hire a bike in the Leh area which is a common activity.


Distance from Leh

Hall of fame is at a distance of over 4 km from Leh on the Leh-Kargil road. It is a 10-20 minute drive to the area. There are other famous destinations nearby as well like Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace and Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Patthar Sahib and Spituk monastery.


Timing and Ticket Fee

The museum opens for tourist visits at 9 A.M. in the morning and the first shift ends at 1 P.M. in the afternoon. The second shift begins at 3 P.M. and ends at 7 P.M. The museum closes off for tourists at 7 P.M. You will need around 2-3 hours to explore the museum completely.

The entry ticket fee for the museum for Indian tourists is Rs. 25 while that for Foreign tourists is Rs. 50. If you want to use a camera inside the museum, the ticket price is Rs. 50 for Indian tourists.

One can see the weapons which are used in the Kargil war if you want to take part in the photography inside the museum you have to pay an extra 50 rupees for this.
