Drass is located in the Kargil district of Ladakh. Lying on the foothills of Zojila Pass, the beautiful destination attracts visitors, across the country. Whether you are a solo traveler or someone planning a big family vacation, it is the perfect tourist attraction.

The best time to plan a trip to the town is from June to September with favourable weather conditions and motorable roads. 

Popularly known as the “Gateway to Ladakh”, outstation trips from Srinagar to Leh often involve enroute sightseeing at the town. It is about 180 kilometers from Srinagar and 60 kilometers from Kargil. The capital city of Leh is still 278 kilometers from Drass and a day-out here is highly recommended.

01. Trekking

Drass Valley is home to some short yet exciting trekking trails. If you stay here longer than a day, be sure to embark on an expedition. 

The most popular trek in Drass is the Tiger Hill Trek. Located at an altitude of 5,353 meters, it is the highest hill of the valley.

From the Drass War Memorial, one can easily spot it on a crystal clear day. As you reach the top, a panoramic view of Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga awaits.

If you are expecting to explore the LoC and engage in border tourism, the offbeat Minimarg Trek is the one for you. 

These treks are open in summer, from June to September when routes are clearer and weather is conducive for long walks. 

02. Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking is one of the most adventurous things to do in Drass. Riders often plan a road trip from Srinagar to Drass, covering about 160 kilometers in 5-6 hours.

The landscape of the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH1) offers perfect conditions for a memorable experience. Even in the Drass itself, tourists can visit the local attractions via bikes.

The internal roads are in good condition. Rent a well-maintained bike from Srinagar or Kargil town. Carry essential documents like visual ID proof and Driving license.

Village walks in Drass offer you an insight into the local culture and traditions of the region. Visit the Drass town, Gund Village, Matayen Village, and Kaksar Village.

These villages are mostly inhabited by Dard and Balti tribes and you get an opportunity to interact with them. As you walk around the lanes, the warm and friendly locals welcome you with an open heart.

The ideal time for camping in Drass Valley is from June to September. Carry essential gears like a sturdy tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mat. 

05. Visit Drass War Memorial

Drass war Memorial, popularly known as Kargil War Memorial commemorates the martyrs of 1999 Kargil War. Explore the memorial and acquire knowledge about the brave heroes and celebrate their velour.

Tourists are welcomed by a touching elegy by Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, dedicated to the victory of Operation Vijay at the entrance. The memorial is built entirely with red sandstone with names of soldiers who lost their lives written with pride.

Kargil Diwas is celebrated at the Drass War Memorial every year on 26th July.

Since it lies in the alpine regions of Jammu and Kashmir, at an altitude of about 3,300 meters, the thin atmosphere offers crystal clear sights of skies and the celestial bodies. The minimal human intervention results in lesser pollution in the valley.
