From here, you can stand for some time and soak in the crystal clear views of Thajiwas Glacier. It is important to know that we don’t go all the way up on the glacier. That’s risky and not at all advisable. The trek limits to Snow Point where some stalls can be found to buy refreshments, tea and coffee.
Some people even camp here for the night. Since the trek is short and easily traceable even in light winters, it is operational most of the year. However, summer is the ideal time for the trek.
09. Sledging (winter)
Sonmarg in winter would not be fun enough if you don’t enjoy the relatively easier yet exciting sport of sledging. Along with skiing and snowboarding, visitors in the town often indulge in sledging. In the activity, you sit on a wooden board with fur cushions and sledge downhill. One or two people can sit on it. You don’t need any special skills for it.

For the entire summer, the routes to Amarnath are filled with pilgrims, moving ahead to Amarnath cave where the naturally occurring sacred Ice Shiva Lingam is found and worshipped.
It is believed to be the home of Lord Shiva where The God used to reside in the same cave. The total distance between Amarnath Cave and Sonmarg is 24 kilometres, taking approximately 3-4 days to complete it. Helicopter services are also available from Sonmarg for the physically demanding Yatra.
