Activities And Attraction In Srinagar

Dal Lake

The popularity of Dal lake stands at the top among all the tourist attractions of Kashmir. The lake is situated in the heart of the city with fir and Chinar trees encircling it. The snow-laden mountains in the backdrop adds to its alluring beauty.

It is one of the iconic lakes to exist, offering a bunch of activities like Shikara rides, houseboat accommodations etc. the cost of Shikara rides is around INR 800-1500, though it varies from luxury boats to budget boats. 

Other than hotels and guesthouses, houseboats are one another popular option to spend the night. They start from INR 2000-10000 per night. You can choose according to your budget. 

Nigeen Lake

The lake of Srinagar that is arguably calmer than Dal lake is Nigeen lake. Less crowds are seen here and that is an ideal situation if you are looking for a serene time here in the capital city.

Even at this lake, activities like Shikara rides and houseboats are there. The price is the same as that of Dal lake, although it may be a bit low because of its lesser popularity.

You can expect it to be between INR 800-1000 for the ride and about INR 2000-7000 for the houseboats. Visit the lake in summer as it is completely frozen in winters and you can not avail these activities. 

Nishat Garden

Completed in 1633, Nishat Bagh is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture.

It was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved Mumtaz Mahal. You can visit here by a cab or Shikara ride and enjoy the scenery of the place. It has giggling waterfalls curated amidst the garden and 12 terraced garden, each of them signifying the 12 zodiac signs.

It is the perfect spot for a history buff. You can also come here for strolls and picnics. You are charged with a minimal fee of INR 10 at the gate before entering the garden. You can get your tickets at the same spot.

Shalimar Garden

Built In the 17the century, the garden is the epitome of beauty and excellency of Mughal architecture. Adorned with huge terraces and other water streams in the middle of it, Shalimar garden was built by Emperor Jahangir. 

It is an ideal attraction for picnics and nature walks and locals from nearby cities often visit here for weekend getaways.   The parks nearby contain varieties of flowers blooming and bursting throughout the year. The reflection of the garden can easily be seen on the surface of Dal Lake’s water. 

The entry fee of the Nishat Garden is a minimal amount of INR 10 for Indians. It is INR 50 for foreigners. 

Pari Mahal

Though only the remains of Pari mahal are there, the monument speaks of class and architecture.

Zabarwan range can be seen embracing it from all the sides. Pari Mahal or Palace of Fairies is one of the most visited historical complexes in Srinagar and you should add this to your itinerary.

The place opens up  at 9am in the morning And remains so till around 7 PM in the evening. Carry your Adhar card or any ID proofs here. To collect the ticket ,you have to pay a small amount of INR 10 at the gate. 

Chashma Shahi

One more opulent Mughal Gardens of Srinagar, Chashma Shahi is a treat to the eyes.

Located in a peaceful ambiance with Chinese trees stands like a guard. Like any other garden, it also has parks where you can relax with a natural view in front of you. You can explore the entire Bagh in 2-3 hours. Carry your camera to take some stunning shots.

It is open to the public seven days a week from 9 am to 7 PM. The entry fees of Chashma Shahi is Rs 10 for adults and Rs 5 for children.

Shankarachrya Temple

Explore the Sacred Shankaracharya temple adding another place to your spiritual journey. It was built by Gopadatya and is also known as Jyateshwar Temple.

Lord Shiva is worshipped in the temple and festivals like Mahashivratri are celebrated wholeheartedly here. Pilgrims offer fruits, milk, flowers to the deity and seek blessings. As it is located at a hill top of Shankaracharya Hill, the view of the entire Srinagar city is mesmerising. 

Before entering the holy complex, put your footwear outside. Photography is not allowed inside the Temple and you should respect that. There is no entry fee for Shankaracharya temple. 

Hari Parbat Fort

Hari Parbat fort contains a collection of small buildings. You will find a Shiva temple, Khwaja Makhdoon Shahib shrine and Ganesh Temple inside the fort where you can offer your prayers.

It was built by Akbar, The Great in the Mughal Era. Located on the Hari Parbat in Srinagar, the architecture of the fort is a blend of Persian and Indian. The huge monument is the ideal depiction of the rich culture that Kashmir inherits.

There is no entry fees for the fort and any other building inside it though you may make donations here as per your wish. 

Shikara Ride

Shikara ride is a Srinagar-specific activity that is relaxing yet fun. You can go for the ride at the Dal and Nigeen Lake in Srinagar.  It transports you to another world which seems like a stairway to the heaven.

A little piece of paradise is seen with snow-laden mountains in the backdrop. You can visit Char Chinarfloating vegetable marlet by Shikara ride.

The average cost of the ride per person is INR 800-1000 though you can go for a more luxurious one that will cost you around INR 5000.

It is another recreational activity to do in Srinagar where you explore Srinagar on foot.

Visit Dachigam National Park

Dachigam National Park offers you a wildlife tour of the different rare Himalayan species. You can spot snow leopards here who are very limited in India.

Some other animals to look out for Himalayan Brown bear,musk deer. The highlight of the national park is that it is the only one that has preserved the Red Deer or Hagul. It is a great place for wildlife photography and bird-watching. 

It is closed on Tuesdays. The entry fees for the park is Rs 25 for Indians and Rs 50 for foreigners. To carry a camera the former has to pay 100 INR and 200 INR for the latter.
